The gentle and elegant English Setter - as distinct from the black and tan Gordon Setter from Scotland and the ruby red Irish Setter . A difficult portrait to paint alla prima. I couldn't find many paintings of English Setters in the archives - at any rate, they feature in a number of hunt scenes, but not as the subject of the painting. The exception being the father and daughter animal painters George Earl (1824-1908) and Maud Earl (1864-1943). This one's by George.
