Beech walk

10"x8", oils on board, this is my other half and little dog in the forest nearby where there are a number of really stunning 'avenues' of beech trees. The colour is always luminous here on all but the wettest and dreariest of days.

There are a huge range of mosses and lichens growing on the trees and across the forest floor. I practised capturing the colours first on scrap oil painting paper until I had a little "recipe" list of colour mixes: luminous moss, bright moss, moss in the shadow, dead moss etc. One really brilliant discovery that is my (current) New Favourite colour is Quinacridone Gold from Holbein Duo. It is the most glorious transparent, luminescent, vibrating burnt orange colour.
