Up close (and a quote from Michelangelo)

This little dog, Gabby, featured last week looking wistfully out to sea (which was a feat of imagination on my part as Gabby lives in Kansas and I don't think she has ever seen the sea). I like painting daxies because they seem to paint themselves so keen are they to come to life.
I read this wonderful quote from Michelangelo the other day: "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free".
Now, every day at that daunting moment when I first put a brush on a pristine white surface, I try and remember this and tell myself there is a dog in there (or cat or whatever) and I must try to paint until they are free.
