Icelandic Sheepdog

Pastel on Pastelmat 7" x 7". The Icelandic sheepdog is Iceland´s only native dog. It came to Iceland with the original Viking settlers in AD 874-930 and has been on the brink of extinction a number of times since, but now has its own association in Iceland to protect the breed. Sir Thomas Brown remarked on the dog in 1650, saying it looked like a fox and was much prized by UK farmers if they could get their hands on one. We have a lot of foxes coming and going through the garden at present - you can smell them as well as see their "visiting cards". We've also had a few flakes of snow, so choosing this breed to represent the letter I seemed appropriate.
